You might have seen all the above advertised at some point and unsure about what each one actually is or what they are, well I am here to answer that question…
Well, they are all more or less the same thing just with different names.
But then why all the different names?
Well, lets start at the start shall we…

Back when I first started doing Scent Sports over ten years ago it wasn’t a named thing, people did things such as Tracking or Scent Matching as part of obedience training but there wasn’t really an organisations that offered it. Most people back then refereed to it as just Nosework cause that is exactly what it is after all. This all changed, well at least for me 10 years ago.
ScentWork UK was formed and started offering workshops, courses and trials aimed at pet dogs, they took the idea from the American equivalent and changed the target odours to something more accessible in the UK (or at least that is what I was told…). From around 2015 we started calling Nosework ScentWork and it did take over the country very quickly which is amazing for all those dogs and owners out there.
Soon after, as always other organisations started offering their own courses and workshop, with that came some new terminology such as Scent Detection rather than ScentWork, now we see all three and even some other names being used. I’ve even seen it just advertised as Scent Training nothing fancy just exactly what it is.
Does it really matter what it is called? No, absolutely not. You or your instructor can call it whatever they want, the most important part is you both are having fun… after all it is meant to be a fun sport…
